some have commented that the salutes were 'conveniently timed', brings to mind the pressmen offering fivers back in the skinhead days in exchange for a posed for salute, and the 'exclusive' stories during the good old days of football violence!

I think you underestimate the Italians.
They feel no shame in their past and their heritage.
The salute to them is like us remembering St Edmund of England, William Wallace, Hywel Dda or any other heroes of these isles.
Remember the salute goes back to Roman times, and they are not ashamed of being fascists too!
Look at the video of the FN rally and you'll see plenty of raised arms.
Outside the Ss Peter and Paul Cathedral when Massimo Morsello's funeral Mass was held, hundreds raised their arms simultaneously.
It is natural to them and not shameful at all.
It's not "German" but a quintessentially Italian salute for the Italians.
